Finnish Ministry of Defense: Russia’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance will not cause concern
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen believes that his country’s accession to NATO will not cause concern to the Russian Federation. Moscow, in his opinion, will assess the Finnish position in the alliance before taking retaliatory steps.
“NATO membership is a defensive decision for Finland,” the head of the department stressed in a commentary to the YLE television and radio corporation. “We want to ensure our own security, peace and freedom.” In his opinion, Russia will evaluate what kind of member of the North Atlantic bloc Finland will become, and in accordance with these conclusions, “it will possibly take countermeasures.”
At the same time, Kaikkonen does not exclude that in the near future “Russia will somehow react to our membership in NATO.” But he is still confident that Moscow has no reason to worry.
On the night of March 31, the ratification of the Finnish application to NATO by all members of the North Atlantic Alliance was completed.
