In Finland, it is necessary to change the system for obtaining Finnish citizenship and prohibit Russians from obtaining a Finnish passport. This initiative was expressed on Tuesday, January 30, by Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen.
According to the politician, reforming the country’s citizenship system is necessary to “effectively prevent various attempts by authoritarian countries to exert influence and other harmful conflicts of interest.”
Hyakkänen called for a move to the principle of reciprocity in granting dual citizenship, saying that in this case Russians “will no longer be granted new dual citizenship.”
Antti Häkkänen has previously made loud statements against Russia. In particular, he argued that Western states had entered into a new cold war with Russiawhich is accompanied by an increase in military production.
The Finnish defense minister also blocked three deals, one of which involved the Russians, saying they threatened national defense. Under this pretext, Häkkänen proposed completely ban real estate transactions for Russians.
