Finland, after joining NATO, can no longer act as a mediator in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, President Sauli Niinistö admitted.

“Finland’s position has changed. Our NATO membership affects these opportunities. Seen from the east side, these positions have deteriorated,” – declared Niinistö on the air of local television (quote from Interfax).

He also answered a question about the possibility of closing the Russian consulate in the Åland Islands, allowing such a step if “unacceptable activity” is recorded there.

On April 4, Finland signed a document on joining NATO. On the same day, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Finland’s entry into the North Atlantic bloc was leading to an aggravation of the situation in the world, but noted that the case with Finland differed from the situation with Ukraine “radically.” According to him, there have never been disputes between Moscow and Helsinki and Finland has never become “anti-Russia”.
