FinExpertiza: a record shortage of job seekers recorded in the labor market in Russia

The number of vacancies at Russian enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2022 decreased by 17.6% in annual terms, while the number of those who joined the labor exchange decreased by 32.3% and amounted to 676 thousand people. Thus, the labor market in Russia has formed a record gap between supply and demand in recent years, follows from the data of the service of the consulting company FinExpertiza.
The need for employees at Russian enterprises from December 2021 to December 2022 decreased by 314.1 thousand people. The reduction in the number of vacancies was recorded in 68 regions. By the end of 2022, there were 2.5 vacancies for every unemployed Russian.
The maximum number of job offers was recorded in the Tula region, where there were 11.2 vacancies per unemployed person. In the Jewish Autonomous Region, there were 10 vacancies per unemployed Russian, in the Leningrad Region – 9.1, in the Amur Region – 8.
There was a shortage of jobs in nine regions of Russia. The largest number of applicants for one vacancy was in the Republic of Ingushetia – 86 people. In Chechnya, 27 people applied for one job, 12 in Dagestan, and 4.5 in Tyva.
In general, analysts say, in 2022 the number of open vacancies, with the exception of January and February, was lower than in the “post-pandemic” 2021, this gap increased especially strongly in the second half of the year. In the fourth quarter of last year, businesses reported 1.7 million job vacancies, down 17.6% from the same period in 2021.
Sanctions and the withdrawal of a number of foreign companies from Russia did not affect unemployment rates, the report says. However, enterprises have reduced the rate of hiring new employees. In general, in the market, employers tried to optimize labor costs, in particular by transferring employees to part-time work.
Earlier in the secretariat of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Tatyana Golikova reportedthat by the end of 2022 the number of registered unemployed in Russia amounted to 564 thousand people. However, the average duration of a job search in Russia increased from 4.3 to 4.6 months. According to the Superjob.ru service, the salaries of Russians over the past year have grown by an average of 12%. The largest increase was received by workers in the field of IT, logistics, transport and construction.
