Figure skater Drobyazko may lose her Lithuanian citizenship in the near future

The Lithuanian Citizenship Commission proposed to President Gitanas Nausėda to deprive figure skater Margarita Drobiazko, who lives in Russia, of her citizenship. About it reported portal of Lithuanian television and radio LRT.
According to LRT, commission chairman Pranas Žukauskas said that the reason for the decision was that Drobyazko publicly expresses support for Russia, “which is interpreted as a hostile state towards Lithuania, the EU states and their allies.”

But a broader context was assessed, that is, the organizers of these shows, their status, their position in the Russian state in the context of this regime. The sponsors of these shows, these productions that are publicly announced are also known, that is, these are many of the sanctioned companies and individuals. Knowing that this “soft” power – culture, art – is considered an integral part of the Russian regime, Russian politics, that is, close relations with such individuals, with such companies, show, even if not in open text, a certain attitude of a person,” said head of the commission.

Drobyazko received Lithuanian citizenship 30 years ago as an exception to play for the Lithuanian national team. Amendments to Lithuanian legislation that came into force in 2023 allow it to be revoked if a person publicly expresses support for a state that poses a threat to the security interests of Lithuania or its allies. Lithuanian authorities also claim that Drobyazko maintains close professional and personal ties with Tatyana Navka, the wife of the press secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov, LRT writes.

The next day, August 10, Nauseda signed decree on the exclusion of figure skaters Margarita Drobiazko and Povilas Vanagas from the list of holders of the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, fifth degree.
