Fico said that Slovakia will not provide military assistance to Ukraine

Slovakia will not supply Ukraine with weapons and military equipment, but will continue to provide humanitarian assistance. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico.

“We support humanitarian and civilian assistance to Ukraine – this will be the official policy of my government. We will not supply Ukraine with any weapons,” he emphasized (quote according to RIA Novosti).

Fico noted that this would be “the best solution for Ukraine” and supported negotiations between Moscow and Kiev. He called on the EU to “transform itself from being an arms supplier to being a peacemaker.”

The Prime Minister also pointed out the unrealisticness of the West’s conditions presented to Russia – the immediate withdrawal of troops from Crimea and new regions of the Russian Federation. He considered the idea of ​​“cornering” a nuclear power naive.

Robert Fico is official became Prime Minister of Slovakia on October 25. In the parliamentary elections at the end of September, his Direction – Social Democracy party won with 23.31% of the votes. The turnout was 68.4%. Previously, Fico already served as Prime Minister of the country in 2006–2010 and 2012–2018.

Western media called the politician “pro-Russian,” pointing to his position on Ukraine. Fico previously promised to stop military aid to Ukraine, he also criticized sanctions against Russia and threatened to veto Kyiv’s invitation to NATO. In the Kremlin called the accusations against Fico are absurd.

Even before Fico’s appointment as Prime Minister of the country, Slovak President Zuzana Caputova decided to postpone the transfer of a new package of military aid to Kiev, since this step had been agreed upon under the government of Ludovit Odor, the newspaper Dennik N wrote. On October 7, Politico, citing a representative of the Slovak government reportedthat the outgoing Slovak government does not plan to send military aid to Ukraine after Fico’s party wins the elections.
