The choice of August 19 to celebrate photography worldwide owes nothing to chance: this date coincides with the invention of photography. Indeed, on August 19, 1839, the invention of the daguerreotype was officially born, a photographic process developed by the French. Louis Daguerre and Joseph-Nicephore Niepce. The French government, which bought the patent, then celebrated this invention, described as a “gift for the world”.

Visa pour l’image – International Photojournalism Festival (Perpignan)
The 2022 edition of the photojournalism festival intends to present, from August 27, the news that the war in ukraineled by Russia, tends to mask. “Unfortunately, the world continues outside of Ukraine … things are happening all over the planet that, because of Ukraine, we don’t talk about anymore. And we are committed to showing the news of the world in its entirety,” told AFP Jean-Francois Leroyfounder of the festival in 1989.
Created in 1989 by Roger Thérond, editorial director of Paris Match, the festival is directed by Jean-François Leroy, Visa pour l’image takes place every year throughout the city of Perpignan.

Arles Meetings
The festival was founded in 1970 by the Arlesian photographer Lucien Clerguethe writer Michael Tournier and historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette. 52 years later, “number of the 40 exhibitions of this photography festivallooks back, as if to draw from it a vanished utopia. The spirit of the times is pensive, between guilt and revolt”, reports Valérie Duponchelle, our special correspondent in Arles.

La Gacilly Photo Festival (Morbihan)
The Breton meeting, which has become the largest open-air photo festival in France, offers a stroll through the heart of 22 exhibitions. The theme of this 19e edition, Visions d’Orient, presents photographs from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. Images of the Austral Lands as well as photographs of Brittany are also exhibited. The festival also presents the black and white photos of Bernard Descamps, the images of Gabriele Cecconi in the refugee camps Rohingya in Bangladesh, those of Stephan Gladieu in Kinshasa or Money Sharma in India.
Between guided tours, photo rally and games, many tools are available to discover photos sometimes approaching 70 m2.

Paul McCartney’s daughter exhibits his photographs (Aix-en-Provence)
The eldest daughter of Paul McCartney exhibited his work for the first time in France, in Chateau La Coste. “All these constant gazes on us were quite intense, I like the distance that photography offers”, explains to our colleague Valérie DuponchelleMary McCartney, daughter of the famous rocker.
The first picture, Family Circle, Sussex, shows Paul McCartney, at his most intimate. Mary McCartney, explains to the Figarobehind the scenes of this photograph: “This is a photo of my dad with my then newborn son, who is now 23. I was visiting my dad for the weekend. He walked into the room and they fell asleep together on the couch. They are abandoned to each other, as shown by the light gesture of the arm, it is completely natural and open. This is not a posed photo. It’s all about harmony. My dad looks very young, happy and confident.”

Judith Joy Ross – Photographs 1978-2015 (Paris)
The American artist, Judith Joy Ross, a major figure in contemporary photography, is known worldwide for her portraits. “Without a camera, I am often worried and ruthless in my judgments, says the portrait painter. With a camera, I can finally see and make sense of it all.”
Since the mid-1970s, she has been recording the faces and attitudes placed in front of her lens. Unlike most of the great portrait painters before her, Judith Joy Ross never had a studio or commercial activity, and only accepted commissions on an exceptional basis.
