Company FACCT (formerly Group-IB), which specializes in developments in the field of cybersecurity, calculated that in the seven months of this year, 1,893 phishing pages appeared designed to steal Telegram accounts. The company’s experts also found 171 pages for theft of WhatsApp accounts.

According to the FACCT report, the main peak of cybercriminal activity in Telegram came in the summer months. So, in June and July, 369 and 589 fraudulent sites were detected, respectively. The minimum fraudulent activity was recorded in January – 140 sites.

In the spring, analysts also began to identify phishing resources for stealing WhatsApp accounts. From April to July, 171 phishing pages were discovered, with activity peaking in May (68 pages) and July (74 pages).

The most popular method used by fraudsters to gain access to user accounts was children’s creative contests and lotteries for summer camp tickets. Messenger users received a message asking them to support the child in the drawing competition. The message contained a link that led to a phishing resource with a form for authorization via Telegram. After clicking on the specified link, the scammers obtained user credentials.
