In 2022, the number of employees under 35 decreased by 1.33 million (by 5.8%), follows from a study by the audit and consulting network FinExpertiza, based on data from the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat).

The fall was a record since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when the reduction was 1.34 million young people. In December 2022, the number of young employees reached 21.5 million people, which was the minimum for the entire period of statistics.

A strong decline in staff was noted among employees aged 25 to 29, their number decreased by 724,000. FinExpertiza noted that this is an important category of employees, because. coupled with work experience, they also have high labor mobility.

According to analysts, the “washout” of young employees was most active in Moscow (decreased by 15.3%) and St. Petersburg (by 14.5%). A record reduction was recorded in the Penza region – the number of employees under 30 years of age decreased by 19.5%. At the same time, an increase in working youth was noted in 11 Russian regions: in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (growth by 12.4%), the Arkhangelsk Region (by 8.1%), Karachay-Cherkessia (by 7.2%), Chechnya (by 6.9%), etc.

Russia also found an increase in employees born after 2003 by 9,000 people (up to 311,000). The number of workers aged 70 and older decreased to 235,000 (by 31,000).

The reason for the lack of young employees in FinExpertiza was the high unemployment rate in the group of people under 35 years old. According to analysts, if by the end of 2022 the average unemployment in the country was 3.7%, then in the group of 20–24 years old it was 12.5%, in the group of 25–29 years old it was 4.8%, and among 30– 34 years old – 4.4%. In particular, the decline in working young people is associated with the outflow of young professionals over the past year.
