Expert: it is quite possible to take spent nuclear fuel from ZNPP to Russia

The removal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from the storage facilities of the Zaporizhzhya NPP to Russia from under shelling is quite real, said Evgeny Bespala, Deputy Vice-Rector for Science and Technology Transfer of Tomsk Polytechnic University.
He noted that the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant does not dispose of SNF, but only long-term storage, moreover, on the surface in concrete containers – this is a standard world practice. At the same time, radioactive waste is also stored along with spent nuclear fuel, but its import into Russia is prohibited by law.
The scientist recalled that there have already been cases in history when nuclear power plants were under threat of attack – for example, during Operation Opera by the Israeli Air Force in Iraq in 1981, when the reactor itself was damaged.
In March, the Russian Armed Forces established control over the ZNPP. On Thursday, the head of the military-civilian administration of the Zaporozhye region, Yevhen Balitsky, said that Ukrainian nationalists continue shelling the ZNPP, at least 3 Ukrainian rockets fell in the area of the storage of radioactive isotopes. At the same time, according to Balitsky, despite the fall of missiles, the radioactive background in the ZNPP area does not exceed the normative indicators, and no radioactive contamination is noted.
Balitsky also accused Ukraine of trying to achieve the effect of a “dirty bomb”, that is, radioactive emissions, by strikes at the ZNPP. According to him, Ukrainian neo-Nazis are deliberately trying to get into the storage facility for nuclear waste at the ZNPP, and their successful provocation of a radioactive release will make the surrounding area uninhabitable.
