Ex-European Commissioner Verheugen: Europe deliberately crossed the line by inviting Kyiv to NATO

The European Union in 2008 deliberately crossed the line in relations with Russia, talking about the possibility of NATO membership for Ukraine. This was stated by the former European Commissioner for Enlargement, Enterprise and Industry Günther Verheugen.
“I am convinced that in 2008 the proposal to Ukraine to become a member of NATO was a deliberate and deliberate crossing of the line, it was unacceptable for Russia because of its security interests,” he said in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung.
He pointed out that the EU then promoted the idea of Ukraine joining the organization, and US President Barack Obama called Russia a “regional power.”
Verheugen believes that such a strategy was a mistake. In his opinion, it would be better to propose the creation of an economic zone from Lisbon to Vladivostok with Ukraine as its core.
