Serbia abandons plans to distribute passports to Russians because of the EU
Serbian authorities abandoned a plan to issue passports to Russians and other foreigners who have lived in the country for at least a year, after a warning from the European Union.
Brussels has threatened Belgrade that if such plans are implemented, it will suspend the visa-free regime for the Balkan country, writes the Financial Times.
The draft law on issuing passports to foreigners was initiated by the Serbian government in April. It suggests that foreigners who have lived in the country for more than a year, working in local companies or self-employed, may qualify for citizenship.
The EU came to the conclusion that such plans of Belgrade threaten the security of the union. As of December 2022, more than 104 thousand Russians have received a residence permit in Serbia since February 2022.
