The principle of common purchases of gas and the price ceiling for it failed to be agreed during the EU summit. The decision has been postponed until December 19, according to the final statement.
“The summit welcomed the progress made and called on the Council of the EU to finalize on 19 December work on proposals to increase solidarity through better coordination of gas purchases, in particular through the EU Energy Platform (the mechanism proposed by the European Commission for joint gas purchases from the EU.— “b”), gas exchange across the border (between EU countries.— “b”) and creating reliable price benchmarks,” the final document says (quoted by TASS).
EU countries did not reach agreement on the ninth package of sanctions at the meeting on 14 December. Poland and the Baltic states object to some relaxations in the package. According to Reuters, representatives of Poland and the Baltic countries believe that concessions for Russian fertilizers could become a loophole for Russian businessmen to circumvent sanctions.
