EU Foreign Ministers agreed on a civilian mission on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The Council of the EU issued a statement on the completion of the coordination by the Foreign Ministers of 27 member countries of the Commonwealth of sending a mission to the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan to monitor, analyze and report on the situation in the region.
“Today, the Council decided to deploy up to 40 EU experts along the Armenian side of the international border with Azerbaijan,” the statement said.
Regarding the composition of the mission, it specifies that monitoring experts will be temporarily seconded from the EU mission in Georgia. At the same time, it is stipulated that the mission “in principle” will last no more than two months.
The authors of the document also recall that the decision to send a mission to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was made after a meeting held on October 6 in Prague by the leaders of the two states, as well as France and the head of the European Council.
The task of the mission in the statement is formulated as: “promoting the restoration of peace and security in the area, strengthening confidence and delimiting the international border between the two states.”
