EU declares weapons carbon neutral

Military products will be considered carbon neutral in Europe. Military-industrial complex products are excluded from the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which imposes a fee – a quasi-tax – on CO2 emissions from production. Attention was drawn to the revision of the status of military products in CBAM at the Institute for Natural Monopoly Problems (IPEM), Vedomosti got acquainted with the analytical note of the institution. The acts establishing the fee and introducing exceptions to the mechanism were approved by the EU Council on April 25.
According to the IPEM note, the document finally approved in April, in contrast to its preliminary versions, is “very detailed, which may be explained by the intention to avoid misinterpretation of its provisions and close loopholes to circumvent them.”
