Estonian authorities are looking for an opportunity to ban Russians and Belarusians from voting in local elections
The Estonian government is looking for an opportunity to limit the right to vote in local elections for citizens of Russia and the Republic of Belarus living in the country. This statement was made by the country’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
According to the Estonian constitution, all local residents over 16 years of age have the right to participate in elections, including citizens of other European Union (EU) countries, third countries and stateless persons.
Kallas noted that the goal of the ruling coalition was to suspend the voting rights of Russians and Belarusians without changing the constitution so that citizens of these countries could not take part in municipal elections while the Ukrainian conflict continued.
“Now both the president and the legal chancellor claim that this cannot be done without changing the constitution,” Kallas said.
