Estonia to close Narva border crossing for trucks for three months

The border crossing in Narva on the Estonian-Russian border will be closed to heavy vehicles for three months from August 18, the Delfi news portal reports. It is clarified that the reason for this decision was the repair of transit roads and Tulevik Street, which is located at the entrance to Narva.
“This decision has been discussed for a long time with the police department, tax and customs department, waiting area operators and city specialists. The control tests carried out showed that oversized vehicles will not be able to pass through the gates of the border checkpoint at the stage of reconstruction of Tulevik Street,” said Dmitry Dyakov, senior law enforcement specialist in Narva. He also clarified that the overlap of construction work on each other occurred due to the crisis in the building materials market, as a result of which “the deadlines for the implementation of two large infrastructure projects have shifted and it is currently impossible to implement them sequentially one after another.”
According to the portal, the trucks will be sent around through other checkpoints: Koidula and Lukhamaa in Estonia, Kunichina Gora and Shumilkino in the Pskov region. The Estonian authorities expect construction work to continue for 2.5-3 months, after which the border crossing will reopen. Traffic through it can be resumed earlier if the reconstruction of roads is completed ahead of schedule.
Also from tomorrow, a ban on the entry of Russian citizens with visas issued by Estonia comes into force. It is assumed that next week the ban will be extended to Russians who received a Schengen visa in other EU countries. The effect of the new rules will not apply to employees of diplomatic missions and members of their families, as well as persons who enter Estonia for humanitarian reasons, close relatives of citizens of the republic or holders of a permanent residence permit.
