Estonia plans to buy ammunition for 1.2 billion euros

The Estonian authorities will purchase ammunition in the amount of 1.2 billion euros in the next four years, follows from the development plan of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic, which was approved by the head of the department Hanno Pevkur. About this on Sunday, July 16, reported on the website of the Estonian Ministry.

Defense Ministry Development Plan for 2024-2027 provides, in addition to the creation of forces and capacity development, the development of a military medical center for disasters, the report says. In the next four years, the republic plans to purchase a medium-range missile system for the development of air defense, ammunition for air attack, build additional barracks and new ammunition depots. The munitions build-up launched last year will continue, with the government spending more than 1.2 billion euros for this purpose.

According to Pevkur, the fighting in Ukraine shows what opportunities Estonia needs to invest in, and this can be done by increasing national defense spending to 3% of GDP.

“In the light of the war in Ukraine, Estonia’s defense investments have grown by leaps and bounds, and we are acquiring significantly more weapons, ammunition and equipment of better quality, but it is also important that we invest in people and infrastructure,” the minister added.

The approved document, as noted, is part of a 10-year plan for the development of national defense until 2031. It ensures the achievement of goals that are based on the military recommendations of the commander of the defense forces, as well as on the goals of the NATO force potential.
