Erdogan: Türkiye expects nothing more from the European Union

Turkey has fulfilled all the conditions for joining the EU, while the European Union has fulfilled almost none, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We have fulfilled all the promises made by the EU, and they have fulfilled almost none of their promises. There has been no change in the EU’s bias towards our country. They are doing an injustice to our country by ignoring the principles and processes they have put forward. We, Turkey, have no expectations from the EU,” he said (quote according to RIA Novosti).

Erdogan added that Brussels must abandon “the injustices they used against us, especially the introduction of visas.”

September 16 Erdogan admittedthat Türkiye may take “different paths” with the European Union. He said this after the publication of a European Parliament report on the situation with the republic’s European integration processes. According to the document, Ankara and Brussels should find alternative ways of cooperation to Turkey joining the bloc.

Turkey signed an association agreement with the European Economic Community (the predecessor of the European Union) back in 1963, and in 1987 it applied for EU membership. Negotiations on the country’s accession to the European bloc began only in 2005 and were repeatedly suspended due to disagreements.

Erdogan said in July that the country needs to open the way to the EU, and in return Ankara will unblock Sweden’s path to NATO. IN THE USA called for Turkey to consider these issues separately.
