Turkey intends to build a new aircraft carrier that will be twice the size of the TCG Anadolu landing ship. This was announced on Sunday by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the opening ceremony of a sports complex in Sakarya.
“We come from a time when people in this country did not know how to make pins. Now we are making our drones. This, of course, will bother them. We will also build an aircraft carrier twice the size.” said he (quote by Haberler).
Erdogan added that today the aircraft carrier TCG Anadolu was sent to the Black Sea, after which it will stay in Izmir for some time.
On April 10, Turkey accepted the first aircraft-carrying universal landing ship Anadolu (TCG Anadolu) into its navy. By configuration, it is actually a “light aircraft carrier” and the first ship in the world to carry attack drones of the Bayraktar family. Erdogan said that the inclusion of the ship in the Turkish Navy is a prime example of the import substitution program in the military-industrial complex, launched in 2004.
The vessel is capable of receiving 11 of the latest Turkish Bayraktar TB3 attack drones or advanced Kizilelma jet drones being developed, as well as up to 10 combat helicopters on deck (Turkish attack T-129 ATAK, American military transport Chinook) and up to 30 UAVs plus 19 helicopters in the hangar .
