Ecuadorian presidential candidate shot dead after campaign rally

Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was killed after an election rally in the capital of the Republic of Quito. About it informs El Universo.
An unknown person shot the politician in the head three times after the rally, which took place at the Coliseo TW Anderson. Eyewitnesses reported that they heard shots, after which the seriously wounded Villavicencio fell to the ground. He was taken to the hospital with no signs of life, where he was pronounced dead.
The death of Villavicencio was confirmed by the current president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso. “Outraged and shocked by the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. My solidarity and my condolences to your wife and your daughters. For the sake of your memory and your struggle, I assure you that this crime will not go unpunished,” the head of the republic wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office said nine other people were injured in the incident, including parliamentary candidate Gizella Molina and two police officers.
El Universo writes that Villavicencio, a suspect in the murder, was wounded during his arrest. First, he was taken to the Quito court, and then transferred to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The Prosecutor General’s Office reports the arrest of six suspects of involvement in the murder of a politician, transmits TV channel Ecuavisa.
In May Lasso dissolved National Assembly and announced the holding of elections. Early presidential and parliamentary elections in Ecuador are scheduled for August 20. According to El Universo, a few weeks ago, Villavicencio reported threats and was granted police protection.
