Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed his opinion on the prospects for Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) within the framework of the economic forum, which was held in Krynica-Zdroj. In his speech, he emphasized that at the moment there is no talk of Ukraine’s direct entry into NATO.
Answering questions about the NATO summit, which took place in Vilnius on July 11-12, Duda spoke about a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, during which they discussed the prospects for Ukraine joining NATO.
“From the very beginning, we realized that this is a very complex issue. The difficulties stem, in particular, from the fact that there is an ongoing conflict on the territory of Ukraine, and we fully understand that Ukraine’s accession to NATO at the moment would imply NATO’s involvement in the conflict with Russia Because of this, it is obvious that the consent of NATO member countries is difficult to expect at the moment,” Duda emphasized.
The President also made it clear that, in accordance with the obligations under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which relates to collective defense, Ukraine’s accession to NATO at this time would be accompanied by serious consequences. This could mean drawing NATO into an armed conflict with Russia.
