Dmitry Artyukhov was re-elected Governor of Yamal

The current head of the region, Dmitry Artyukhov, was elected governor of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug), reported press service of the district legislature.

Direct elections of governors in Yamal were abolished in 2014, so the head of the region is chosen by deputies of the regional parliament by secret ballot from among three candidates nominated by the president. As clarified in parliament, Artyukhov’s candidacy was supported by the majority of deputies of the legislative assembly at a meeting on September 10. He will serve as governor for the next five years. The resolution on this was signed by the Chairman of the Yamal Legislative Assembly, Sergei Yamkin.

In August, President Vladimir Putin proposed choosing the head of Yamal from among three candidates. In addition to the current governor, deputies of the Yamal parliament Alexander Golubenko and Maxim Lazarev were vying for the post. Each presented their program for the development of the region, and parliamentarians found Artyukhov’s plans more convincing, the report says.

“Dmitry Andreevich’s program can be summarized in a short slogan: “Yamal for the people!” This includes improvement, opening of new social facilities, housing construction and further development of the economic potential of the region. This is a verified plan of action,” the legislative assembly quotes Yamkin.

Artyukhov has headed the region since 2018. Before that, since 2016, he was deputy governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Since 2010, he worked in the office of the Governor of Yamal. He began his career in investment and banking structures. In April, Putin, at a meeting with Artyukhov, supported his intention to run for a new term and wished him good luck.
