Director, actor and writer, People’s Artist of Russia Andrei Zhitinkin told MK about the last performance and the last wish to his colleagues made by Yuri Solomin shortly before his stroke. Zhitinkin called Solomin’s death “a terrible beginning of the year,” and also spoke about the creative credo of the outstanding artistic director.
– Someone tried to attack him that he was leading the theater only in a traditional way. But the Maly Theater was born in the bowels of Moscow State University and therefore should be a theater of classical names, belonging to the Russian psychological school. When the Soviet Union collapsed, it was Solomin who saved MT. And, by the way, everyone has already forgotten about this, but at one time he was chosen by the team itself, it was not an appointment from above.
– What are you most grateful to Yuri Solomin for?
– For calling me to the Maly Theater. I probably wouldn’t have staged so many wonderful performances: “Masquerade,” “The Queen of Spades,” “The Idiot,” if it weren’t for him. Our last meeting was shortly before the stroke. The last performance that he blessed was “My Tender Beast” based on Chekhov’s story “On the Hunt”. Solomin came (to the first reading), although he did not feel well, and said that Anton Pavlovich was his favorite author, and such an iconic playwright for the Maly Theater as Ostrovsky. And as he was leaving, he suddenly turned and said: “I wish you a full house.” This is how I remember him.
