Dina Boluarte, who previously held the position of Vice President of Peru, took the oath and became the new president of the country after the impeachment of Pedro Castillo, transmits El Comercio.

It is specified that Dina Boluarte became the first woman president of Peru. In her inaugural address, she denounced the coup d’état attempted by former President Pedro Castillo. She also drew attention to the need to form a government that would include representatives of all political forces.

Former President Castillo, who has been in power since July 2021 and was removed from office by the Peruvian congress, was arrested “on suspicion of committing a rebellion to the detriment of the state” and also because of possible involvement in corruption crimes. A few hours before he was removed from office, he issued an appeal in which he denied all accusations of committing corruption crimes.

Now, if Castillo is found guilty of organizing a rebellion and committing a crime against the constitutional order of the country (Article 346 of the Criminal Code of Peru), he faces 10 to 20 years in prison.

This is not the first attempt by Parliament to remove Castillo from office. In particular, the parliament has already tried to impeach the president in December 2021 and in March of this year, but the attempts were unsuccessful.

Shortly before the meeting on December 7, the former president dissolved parliament, imposed a curfew in the country and announced the need to amend the Constitution and the judiciary of Peru. Despite this, the meeting took place. As a result of the vote, the removal of Castillo was supported by 101 people, while 87 were legally required.

The former president of Peru, Martin Vizcarra, who was replaced by Castillo, was also removed from office as a result of the impeachment proceedings. He was accused of bribery when he served as governor of the Moquegua region from 2011-2014. He led Peru from 2018 to 2021. His predecessor, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, also resigned ahead of schedule – he resigned ahead of the impeachment vote.
