The State Duma today adopted amendments to the law “On Folk Arts and Crafts” in the third reading. Deputy Elena Yampolskaya emphasized that the new version of the law will make it possible to recognize a real Russian nesting doll by sight and distinguish it from a Chinese fake.
Yampolskaya noted, but the new law will change the previous one, which is already a quarter of a century old. The main objective of the amendments is to combat counterfeit goods in the handicrafts market.
So that the Duma members were left in no doubt that the topic was important, Yampolskaya presented her product to her colleagues:
“Here are two nesting dolls,” Yampolskaya demonstrated wooden dolls from the podium, “One is a Khokhloma painting. The second one is made by a handicraftsman in the next entrance. The muzzle is crooked, the proportions are off, the color doesn’t fit well. This is a disgrace, of course.”
The deputy complained that there had previously been an unsuccessful attempt to introduce an article that would prohibit the sale of Chinese counterfeits of Russian nesting dolls. So far the initiative has not received support from the Cabinet of Ministers.
But the new law will introduce a register of masters: “If you are not on the register, you are not a master,” said Yampolskaya.
