Deputy Lantratova proposed imprisonment for up to 8 years for attempts to disrupt elections

Deputy Yana Lantratova reported that the State Duma proposed toughening punishment for attempts to disrupt elections, including by setting fires at polling stations. According to her, they intend to prepare the bill as soon as possible.

“We will prepare a bill with our colleagues as soon as possible, so that there is time for its consideration and adoption before the next elections, which, in our opinion, should be held according to the new rules,” said Yana Lantratova “RIA News”.

She clarified that deputies will prepare a bill on punishment of five to eight years in prison for attempting to disrupt elections by arson at a polling station or in another way. More severe responsibility, she said, should be borne by those who act on instructions from other states.

Yana Lantratova called the current punishment for attempting to disrupt the elections “quite mild.” According to Art. 141 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the maximum punishment for such actions is up to five years in prison.

On the first day of the presidential elections in Russia, March 15, in several regions of the country, ballot boxes were filled with coloring substances – ink, brilliant green or paint. A woman in Moscow set fire to voting booth, and in St. Petersburg and in Kogalym they tried to set fire to the areas using incendiary mixtures. Criminal cases have been initiated against those involved in the incidents under Article 141.
