The authorities of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) will focus on the development of enterprises producing products with high added value, said the head of the region Denis Pushilin.

“We constantly hear that Donbass has great potential, this is true, but you cannot live only in the past: priorities change, the model changes,” Mr. Pushilin pointed out during a speech at the World Youth Festival.

According to the politician, until 2014, the economic model of Donbass enterprises involved the export of raw materials and workpieces at a low markup, including to the West. The partners processed raw materials into goods, set a high markup and supplied them to markets, setting a much higher price, the politician complained: “Who is to blame? We are to blame, the model that was built.”

Now the republic’s leadership is “building models” with an emphasis on enterprises “where high added value is formed,” Denis Pushilin pointed out. “We want to close the cycles (of production.— “Kommersant”), which Donbass was deprived of in the interests of the oligarchy, to form mechanical engineering and machine tool manufacturing in the region… These are not deferred actions, but what is happening now,” stated the head of the subject. The oligarchs, taking into account whose interests the previous model of enterprise operation was built, have been “absent” in the Donbass since 2014, Mr. Pushilin added: “They fled, now they are not there.” Today’s wealthy people are “forced to work within the political necessity of the country,” the politician explained. “Work, but don’t forget about people, your enterprises, the environment, taxes and your country,” said Denis Pushilin.
