Defense corporations of the West have risen in price by 22% over the year

Against the background of the military operation in Ukraine and rearmament in Europe, the market value of the largest Western military-industrial corporations grew by 21.5% in 2022. Their total capitalization increased from $579 billion in December 2021 to $703 billion in December 2022, Vedomosti calculated according to Defense News and Tradingview. The ranking included 25 companies whose shares are traded on the market, military products dominate in revenue and were actively supplied to Kyiv. While the Western corporate sector as a whole (S&P 1200) sank 16% in a year, arms manufacturers were arguably the main beneficiaries of the political crisis in Europe.
An invitation to profit
On December 8, an official reception was held at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington in honor of the 31st anniversary of the country’s armed forces. On the invitation card, under the cross of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and elegant blue font, which stated that the Ambassador of Ukraine Oksana Markarova and military attaché Boris Kremenetsky “asked to please keep company”, the logos of the military corporations Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Pratt & Whitney and Lockheed Martin flaunted as event sponsors.
Such a frank indication of funding “screamed about what is customary to be silent”: how close major military contractors have become with Ukraine and how much the war has become an object of profit for them, the Vox edition, which received the invitation, noted. “Ukrainian diplomats should probably give some serious thought to how they look when partying with defense contractors who are cashing in on this terrible war,” Carnegie Endowment fellow Matt Dass told Vox.
