Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that on Tuesday evening, the leaders of the countries of the post-Soviet military bloc CSTO will discuss the escalation of tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
“At the request of the Armenian side, a meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council will be held today at approximately 18.30 in the format of a videoconference,” he said.
Ushakov specified that the discussion would take place behind closed doors. However, according to its results, Armenia presiding in the CSTO will inform the media about the decisions taken. The Russian side may also issue a separate statement.
Ushakov recalled that on the night of September 12-13, Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Nikol Pashinyan. And on September 16, on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Samarkand, a bilateral meeting between the Russian president and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will take place.
Moscow, according to Ushakov, calls on Baku and Yerevan to exercise restraint. The parties need to adhere to the ceasefire and other points of the tripartite agreement concluded in 2020, he said.
Recall that this is not the first time that Armenia has turned to its CSTO allies for support. However, the forces of the organization have never been used to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
On Tuesday night, hostilities broke out on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the parties accuse each other of starting the aggravation. Yerevan stated that the Azerbaijani military fired on the territory of Armenia from drones. According to Pashinyan, the losses amounted to 49 people killed. Baku, in turn, claims that it was the Armenian military that fired at the positions of the Azerbaijani troops on the border and also reports on the dead and wounded.
