Ukraine, at the request of the EU, has reinstated criminal liability for smuggling of goods
Ukrainian media report that President Vladimir Zelensky signed a previously adopted bill on the criminalization of commodity smuggling. It is indicated that the adoption of the relevant law was one of the EU conditions for the transfer of macro-financial assistance worth 1.5 billion euros in December.
It is reported that from July 1, 2024, a fine of 170 to 452 thousand hryvnia will be imposed for smuggling goods whose value ranges from 7.57 million to 15.14 million hryvnia ($201.2-402.4 thousand). For large amounts of smuggling, the fine will be 850 thousand hryvnia, and imprisonment for up to 11 years with confiscation of property may also be imposed.
The fine for smuggling excisable materials worth from 1.136 million to 2.271 million hryvnia will be 340 thousand hryvnia, and a penalty of imprisonment for up to 6 years can also be applied. If the cost of the goods turns out to be more, the fine will be 1.275 million hryvnia, the prison term will be up to 12 years with confiscation.
