Konstantinov: Crimea will raise the issue of canceling the decision to transfer the peninsula to the Ukrainian SSR
The head of the Crimean parliament, Vladimir Konstantinov, said on Sunday that the presidium of the parliament of the Republic would initiate the issue of canceling the 1954 decision to transfer the peninsula to the Ukrainian SSR from the RSFSR, RIA Novosti reported.
“We intend to carry out this work,” Konstantinov told the agency.
According to the politician, this issue is planned to be discussed at the next meeting of the Presidium of the Crimean Parliament.
“We plan to entrust its detailed study to the Scientific Council for Lawmaking under the Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea,” Konstantinov said.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol were in favor of joining the Russian Federation.
Kyiv still considers Crimea its temporarily occupied territory, many Western countries support the Ukrainian authorities in this matter.
The leadership of the Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea voted for reunification with Russia in a democratic way, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that this issue was “finally closed.”
The Crimean region was part of the RSFSR until February 19, 1954. On this day, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued a decree on its transfer to the Ukrainian SSR. This decree was initiated by Nikita Khrushchev, who worked in Ukraine for a long time. After the collapse of the USSR, the peninsula remained part of Ukraine.
