Courts declared a record 350.8 thousand Russians bankrupt in 2023 – Kommersant

In 2023, Russian courts declared 350.8 thousand citizens and individual entrepreneurs insolvent, Interfax writes, citing data from Fedresurs. The agency notes that this is the maximum number since the existence of the personal bankruptcy procedure. In total, from October 2015, when the procedure was introduced, to the end of 2023, the courts declared 1.1 million citizens insolvent.
At the same time, Interfax notes that the growth rate of the number of citizens declared bankrupt by the court has been declining for the third year in a row. So, in 2021 their number increased by 62%, in 2022 – by 44.2%, and in 2023 – by 26.2%.
From Fedresurs data it follows that in 2023, in 96.6% of cases, citizens themselves initiated personal bankruptcy proceedings. The share of bankruptcy creditors as applicants last year was 3.1%, the Federal Tax Service – 0.4%. On average, creditors of citizens managed to receive only 6% of the debt amount from bankrupts, and in 69.2% of cases they received nothing.
The number of corporate bankruptcies in Russia, according to Fedresurs, last year decreased by 18.2% compared to 2022 and amounted to 7.4 thousand. The largest number of bankruptcies was recorded in construction (1822), trade (1812) and operations with real estate (734).
