The consular agency of Poland in Smolensk, the decision to close which was previously made by Russia, will stop working on August 31, according to website Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The office will be liquidated on August 31, 2023, and its current tasks will be carried out directly by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Moscow,” the message says.
Warsaw called Moscow’s decision a “highly symbolic” gesture, as well as an unfriendly and “incomprehensible” act. Poland reserves the right to appropriate retaliatory measures, the Foreign Ministry added.
July 14, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed an order to accept the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to close the consular agency of Poland in Smolensk. The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers explained that the decision “allows to restore the parity of consular institutions” of the two countries against the backdrop of unfriendly actions by Warsaw.
The government recalled, in particular, the illegal confiscation of the real estate of the Russian embassy in Poland and the “significant reduction” of Russia’s diplomatic presence in the republic. On April 29 in Warsaw, local authorities and police entered the school building at the Russian Embassy and demanded that employees leave it, as Poland decided to transfer this property to the state last year. On May 10, the school at the Russian Embassy in Warsaw resumed work in a new location.
