In Egypt, construction began with the participation of Russia of power unit No. 2 of the first nuclear power plant in the country, El-Dabaa, reports “RIA News” with reference to the press service of Rosatom. Specialists started concreting the foundation of the power unit.

The concrete pouring ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear Power Authority (NPPA) Amgad El-Wakil, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, Mohammed Shaker, CEO of the state corporation “Rosatom» Aleksey Likhachev, Alexander Korchagin, Senior Vice President of JSC ASE for NPP Construction Project Management, as well as project teams of the engineering division of Rosatom and NPPA.

“The launch of the nuclear power plant will play a crucial role in the socio-economic and technological life of Egypt and will give impetus to the gradual transition of the country’s industry and economy to low-carbon sources. This will create a solid foundation for the confident and sustainable development of Egypt for decades to come,” Likhachev said at the ceremony.

He noted that the start of construction of the second power unit of the El-Dabaa NPP indicates that the project is gaining momentum. It is noted that this is the largest project of Russian-Egyptian cooperation since the construction of the Aswan Dam.

June 29, 2022 «Rosatom” reported that the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority had issued a permit for the construction of the first power unit of the El Dabaa nuclear power plant. Construction started in July the first power unitand on October 31 the state corporation received a license for the construction of the second block of the station.

The El Dabaa nuclear power plant is the first nuclear power plant in Egypt to be built in the city of El Dabaa. The nuclear power plant will consist of four power units with a capacity of 1200 MW each with reactors of the VVER-1200 type (pressure-cooled power reactor) of generation III+.
