President Vladimir Putin, during a conversation with workers at the Stankomash industrial park in Chelyabinsk, said that companies that left Russia created a production culture in the country and then left it to Russian companies. According to him, such foreign brands gave Russian industry a chance to quickly take a place in the market.
“What happened? Some brands have left. Many thanks to them, they created teams, worked appropriately on the production culture, and so on, and so on, and so on. But our people pick it up instantly and move on,” the president said (quoted by TASS).
Vladimir Putin noted that Russians have a common feature – “the desire to overcome difficulties” in an emergency situation. “When our people face any challenges, difficulties, mechanisms immediately turn on that may be dormant in a normal, calm life,” said Vladimir Putin.
Following the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions against Russia in connection with them, foreign companies en masse announced their withdrawal from the Russian market. In January 2023, Swiss researchers Simon Evenett and Niccolò Pisani estimated that less than 9% of companies from the EU and G7 countries that owned subsidiaries in Russia had completely left. In December 2023, Vladimir Putin stated that the number of foreign companies operating in the country, despite the sanctions imposed by the West, had not decreased, but, on the contrary, had increased. According to him, from March 2022 to November 2023, the number of such companies increased by almost 1.5 thousand – from 24.1 thousand organizations to 25.6 thousand.
In 2023, Russian applicants compensated for the decline in foreign patent activity – the number of applications by Russian authors increased by 8.7%, to 20.6 thousand. Most actively, Russian applicants wanted to obtain patents in areas such as pharmaceuticals and automotive industry, de facto occupying the niches of the departed technology suppliers from developed countries.
