The Bureau of the Novosibirsk Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation supported the nomination of the deputy of the legislative assembly Roman Yakovlev for the election of the head of the region. Five years ago, the Communist Party, in agreement with United Russia Governor Andrey Travnikov, did not field its candidate here. Then there were no communists in the gubernatorial elections in a number of other Siberian regions – the Omsk region, the Altai and Krasnoyarsk territories. This time the Communist Party intends to compete for the post in all four.

The expanded bureau of the Novosibirsk regional committee of the Communist Party unanimously supported the nomination of deputy of the Legislative Assembly Roman Yakovlev to governor, the second secretary of the cell, State Duma deputy Renat Suleimanov told Kommersant. He did not discuss the proposed candidacy, explaining that the final decision on this matter would be made by the Presidium of the Central Committee. Then the candidate will be nominated by the regional party conference, he added.

Roman Yakovlev is a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the last two convocations, both times he was elected in the single-mandate constituency No. 31 in the Leninsky district of Novosibirsk. In 2014, he headed the district election headquarters of the communist Anatoly Lokot, who eventually became the mayor. In 2021, he lost to United Russia party Viktor Ignatov in the elections to the State Duma, and since 2017 he has been a candidate member of the Central Committee.

Recall that in the last election of the governor of the Novosibirsk region, which took place in 2018, the candidate from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation did not participate. Then Anatoly Lokot and the acting governor of United Russia Andrei Travnikov signed an agreement under which the mayor renounced his claims to the post of head of the region, and Mr. Travnikov in response promised to support him in the re-elections in 2019. Both got what they wanted.

Five years later, Andrei Travnikov is determined to be re-elected for a second term. On May 16, the governor met with President Vladimir Putin and asked his opinion on this matter. “I wish you success, good luck, I hope that people will appreciate what has been done in the Novosibirsk region,” the head of state blessed the extension of Mr. Travnikov’s powers. Anatoly Lokot refused gubernatorial ambitions in advance.

In addition to the Novosibirsk region, in 2018 there were a number of regions where the Communist Party did not field its candidates – these are the Omsk and Vladimir regions, as well as the Altai and Krasnoyarsk regions. Everywhere the solution was a compromise. For example, the Omsk communists, as RBC wrote, explained the refusal to fight by a good attitude towards the acting governor, a representative of A Just Russia, Alexander Burkov. And Krasnoyarsk party members even publicly supported the former speaker of the Legislative Assembly Alexander Uss for this post, stating that there are ideas close to them in the United Russia program.

This time, the Communist Party is preparing to take part in the struggle for the governor’s seat in all of the above subjects (elections will be held everywhere except the Vladimir region, where the head of the region was elected ahead of schedule last year). Thus, Anton Artsibashev, deputy head of the Communist Party faction in the Legislative Assembly of the Altai Territory, told Kommersant that the candidate, most likely, would be the first secretary of the regional committee, State Duma deputy Maria Prusakova: “In all the proposals that come from our local branches, there is one candidate.” The Omsk Communists held a bureau meeting on preparations for the gubernatorial elections on May 15. According to a Kommersant source in the party, “with a high degree of probability” the secretary of the regional committee, State Duma deputy Andrei Alekhin will become the candidate. The discussion of a candidate for Krasnoyarsk governor is still ongoing, Alexander Ratakhin, head of the Communist Party faction in the legislature of the region, told Kommersant. According to him, the Communists have “a good list of candidates”, which includes “both deputies of the Legislative Assembly and the leadership of the regional committee.”

According to political scientist Rostislav Turovsky, the situation for the Communist Party in these regions has seriously changed over the past five years. “The nomination is a reaction to the fact that the Communist Party of the Russian Federation does not have such clear agreements with the authorities as it was before. They have ceased to reckon with the communists, they cannot but act, – the expert explains. – But in the Novosibirsk region they are afraid to nominate a strong candidate. In the Omsk region and the Altai Territory there is a mood for battle or bargaining – what exactly will be clear later.
