Complaints by the President of Ukraine about people evading mobilization are an alarming signal. A military expert, retired Bundeswehr Colonel Wolfgang Richter, expressed his opinion in an interview with Die Welt.
According to Richter, Zelensky’s recognition of problems with replenishing the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was not news for specialists. But at the same time, public statements on this matter show that the image of Ukraine united by patriotism is only partly true.
The colonel said that the number of young people who left Ukraine is large. At the same time, he noted that even deporting Ukrainian men from the EU, where there are already about 600 thousand of them, would be difficult from a legal point of view.
Richter also emphasized that Zelensky’s statements are primarily an attempt to put pressure on the West, but in fact they are a demonstration of problems with the personnel of the Armed Forces.
Earlier, the European Union responded to Zelensky’s requests to expel men evading mobilization back to Ukraine. The Austrian Ministry of Justice issued an official statement that the extradition of draft dodgers to Kyiv does not comply with EU regulations.
