1,300 Starlink terminals used by Ukraine’s armed forces are currently disabled for non-payment, CNN reports.
As noted in the material, previously the use of 1,300 Starlink terminals cost Ukraine $2,500 per month for each. Already in September, the debt grew to $20 million, after which the Ukrainian military refused to pay, arguing that the budget was limited.
As a result, already with the onset of October, part of the terminals was turned off, including directly on the front line in its southern part. CNN describes the situation as a “catastrophic loss of connection”. At the same time, Starlink terminals remain an uncontested option for the Ukrainian military, as cell towers and Internet communications were destroyed during the hostilities.
In mid-October, Starlink owner Elon Musk announced that his company would no longer be able to pay for satellite maintenance in Ukraine. The businessman made it clear that this was his reaction to the obscene language from the ex-Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnyk. Earlier, he cursed Musk on a social network for the fact that the entrepreneur proposed his project for a peaceful settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Musk later reluctantly agreed to provide Starlink services to Ukraine at a loss to the company.
According to CNN, the Pentagon is now in talks with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to finance the Starlink project in Ukraine.
