The United States is considering imposing sanctions against Chinese companies collaborating with Russia in the military sphere. It is assumed that these measures could become the first direct sanctions against Beijing.
As reported by CNBC, Senator Gerald Connolly said that lawmakers are already studying possible plans following similar initiatives from the European Union.
The proposed measures could have a major impact on the Chinese economy, which is already suffering from a slow recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and problems in the real estate sector. At the same time, they may also affect the US economy due to the close economic interconnection. However, according to Connolly, this will not stop the introduction of sanctions, and they could be introduced soon.
The senator expressed hope that the threat of sanctions will lead to a rethinking of Beijing’s policy regarding support for Russia. When asked about possible sanctions against China, Senator Ben Cardin noted the need for cooperation with other countries. Earlier, a US intelligence report indicated that China has become Russia’s main military ally, providing Moscow with key technologies and dual-use equipment.
