Coalition shocked by US plans to transfer prohibited ammunition to Ukraine
The actions of the United States in the Cluster Munitions Coalition (CMC) were called a shocking step. The Association of Public Organizations issued a statement condemning the US decision to transfer deadly weapons to Ukraine.
The Coalition noted that they were shocked by the US plans and stressed that their implementation would lead to many civilian casualties – both at the time of the shelling and in subsequent years – due to the large number of unexploded shells. Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Coalition Paul Hannon noted that the use of cluster munitions would exacerbate the already massive contamination of the territory of Ukraine with landmines and other explosive objects.
The SMS, citing the UN and other international organizations, stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have already used cluster munitions several times. And they were reminded that they are scattered with the help of artillery or aircraft over a large area, which increases the damaging effect.
On Friday, the White House announced the decision to supply cluster munitions to Ukraine. Their use is prohibited by an international convention that has been ratified by 123 countries, including Germany, the UK and France. The US and Ukraine refused to sign this document.
