Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu expressed concern about the growing conflict between Beijing and Washington, he stressed that this could lead to “an unbearable catastrophe” for the entire world community. In his speech at the annual Asian Security Summit “Dailog Shangri-La”, the minister noted that China prefers dialogue over confrontation, despite the existing differences between the two countries.
Li Shangfu noted the importance of finding common interests and common ground for developing relations and deepening cooperation between China and the United States. He also added that the world is spacious enough for both countries to develop in parallel.
Recently it became known about the incident that occurred in the Taiwan Strait between Chinese and American warships. According to information from the US Navy, the Chinese warship made dangerous maneuvers near the American destroyer USS Chung-Hoon, being at a distance of less than 150 meters. In response, the US Navy destroyer was forced to change course and slow down. Commenting on the incident, Li Shangfu said that foreign warships and aircraft enter the areas adjacent to China’s territory not for peaceful purposes, but with provocative intentions. At the same time, he noted that China is not against the peaceful passage of foreign ships.
