China is about to impose sanctions on the heads of two US defense makers Raytheon Technologies and Boeing Defense in response to US military aid to Taiwan. This was announced at a briefing by the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning.
“The Chinese government has made the decision to impose sanctions on the chairman and CEO of Raytheon Technologies and the president and CEO of Boeing Defense,” said Mao Ning (quote according to RIA Novosti).
The representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed that such actions by the United States grossly violate the principle of “one China”.
In early September, the US State Department announced plans to sell arms to Taiwan for $1.1 billion. It also became known yesterday that the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a bill to strengthen security ties with Taiwan.
According to the document, Washington going provide Taipei with $4.5 billion to spend on weapons. $2 billion of which is covered by US loan guarantees. The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a strong protest against the bill.
In addition, the USA considered the possibility of imposing preventive sanctions against China as part of a containment policy. Thus, Washington wants to prevent the PRC’s military operation to return Taiwan under its control.
The situation in Taiwan escalated after the visit to the island of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi. The Chinese Foreign Ministry protested, and after the PRC announced military exercises in the waters of Taiwan from August 4 to 7. Later, a delegation of US congressmen and Republican Senator Marsha Blackbear also visited the island. In China declaredthat such steps violate the One China principle.
China considers Taiwan its province, so the PRC government opposes any contacts between the island’s administration and countries with which Beijing has diplomatic relations. China has repeatedly noted that it will take “serious measures” to protect the sovereignty of the country and its territorial integrity.
