China stops mentioning “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan

The new government report presented by Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the opening of the National People’s Congress on March 5 makes no mention of “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan, Reuters notes.
Instead, the report emphasized a call for “reunification” with Taiwan, with the premier emphasizing his desire to be firm on the issue, abandoning the use of the word “peaceful” that had been used in previous reports.
The publication clarifies that although this is not the first time that there has been no mention of “peaceful reunification,” such language is being closely watched as it is considered a possible sign of a tougher stance towards Taiwan.
In addition, the report also notes China’s plan to increase defense spending by 7.2% this year, which would more than double its military budget over the past 11 years.
