China sends 20 aircraft to Taiwan

Amid large-scale exercises, China sent 20 aircraft towards Taiwan, Western media reported on Saturday.
14 of them crossed the dividing line in the Taiwan Strait. This line separates the zones under the control of Beijing and Taipei.
Fighters flew from Taiwan to warn Chinese aircraft against approaching the island.
According to the Taiwan Defense Ministry, 14 Chinese ships were also active around the island.
In response to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) exercises, the Taiwan authorities organized sea and air patrols on the island, and also deployed land-based air defense systems.
The Chinese army is conducting live-fire military exercises in 6 regions around Taiwan from Aug. 4 to 7. The exercise came in response to a visit to Taipei this week by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
Beijing qualified her arrival as a gross violation of China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During the exercise, Beijing also launched ballistic missiles that flew over the island.
The history of this confrontation began in 1949, when, after the proclamation of the People’s Republic of China, part of the Chinese Kuomintang party settled on the island of Taiwan and called it the Republic of China on Taiwan.
Beijing upholds the “one China principle”, according to which it is impossible to simultaneously recognize both the PRC and the Republic of China on Taiwan. However, many Western countries recognize the Republic of Taiwan, and in almost all major states there are unofficial cultural and economic offices of Taipei.
