China opposes weapons demonstration in South China Sea

Extraterritorial countries should respect the efforts of China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and should not send warships and aircraft to the South China Sea and provoke disagreements between countries in the region, said Wang Yi, head of the office of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee, who hosted participation in the meeting of foreign ministers on East Asian cooperation in Jakarta.

The diplomat expressed hope that “exterritorial countries will respect the efforts of China and ASEAN and play an active role in maintaining regional stability, and not vice versa.” He called for an end to sending “so many modern ships and aircraft to the South China Sea to demonstrate their power,” and to provoke and use disagreements between the countries of the region to “achieve their own geopolitical interests.”
The South China Sea is now one of the safest and most navigable sea areas in the world, he said.
