China has surpassed the United States in the number of launchers for ground-based missiles

The Pentagon has notified Congress that China already has more silo and mobile ballistic missile launchers than the US military (Americans on land have ICBMs based exclusively in silos). This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing a letter from US Strategic Command Commander General Anthony Cotton to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees. Chinese missiles, according to the document, include both ICBMs and medium-range missiles, while the US still has more ICBMs than China.
In 2021, The Washington Post, citing an analysis of satellite imagery by the James Martin Center, reported that 119 ICBM silos were under construction in China’s northern province of Gansu. The number of land-based ICBMs in the United States is now 400, and in total, under the START treaty, Russia and the United States can have up to 700 deployed ICBMs, ballistic missiles on submarines (SLBMs) and heavy bombers. According to the 2022 Pentagon report on Chinese military strength, the PRC is set to deploy about 1,500 nuclear warheads (strategic and tactical) by 2035, compared with over 400 in 2021.
