China-friendly party wins local elections in Taiwan

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen stepped down as leader of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) following its defeat in local elections. Tsai announced her decision on the evening of November 26 after the announcement of the results. The DPP is significantly inferior to its main opponent, the Kuomintang Party. Of the 22 administrative divisions in Taiwan in which citizens elected mayors of cities, deputies to city and county assemblies, and other leaders, the Kuomintang won 13, including the post of mayor of the capital of Taipei. The DPP was only able to win in five administrative divisions. Cai Ing-wen took responsibility for the unsatisfactory results of the elections. “These results show that there are still many areas that we need to think deeply about,” she said, speaking to supporters.
