China calls the issue of Taiwan’s ownership a “red line” in relations with the United States

The Taiwan issue is a “red line” in relations between the United States and China, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during talks with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

“The Taiwan issue is a major red line in China-US relations that cannot be crossed. The US should abide by the three Sino-US joint communiqués and fulfill its commitment not to support Taiwanese independence,” Wang Yi said (quote according to TASS).

In June, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Beijing – he held talks with then Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, then met with his boss Wang Yi. China considers Taiwan to be its province, so the authorities oppose any contacts between the island’s administration and countries with which Beijing has diplomatic relations.
