China and South Africa supported the expansion of the BRICS

Beijing supports the expansion of the BRICS and the accession of new partners to it. This was reported in the press service of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
“China has always been convinced that BRICS is an open and inclusive mechanism, Beijing supports the BRICS expansion process and welcomes the early entry into the BRICS “big family” of more like-minded partners,” the ministry said (cit. according to RIA Novosti).
With a similar position spoke and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. “South Africa supports the expansion of BRICS membership. <...> An expanded BRICS will represent a heterogeneous group of countries with different political systems that share a common desire for a more balanced world order,” he said in his address, published on the website of the President of South Africa. Ramaphosa specified that “the value of BRICS goes beyond the interests of its current members.”
On August 16, Indian Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar said that India has an open view on the admission of new members to the BRICS, but specific criteria are needed for this.
Now 23 countries have applied to join the BRICS. At the end of July, Bloomberg, citing officials familiar with the situation, informedthat India and Brazil oppose China’s proposal to expand the BRICS at the expense of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. In turn, in India, this information was denied.
The Kremlin has previously stated that Russia adheres to the position that, in one form or another, the expansion of the BRICS will contribute to the development and strengthening of the organization. According to the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, during the BRICS summit, it will be discussed in what form and volume this can happen.
The BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will be held in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 22 to 24 August. It will be held in person for the first time in three years. Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the summit via video link. Directly on the site, Moscow will be represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
